Not Exactly What They Expected
Not Exactly What They Expected is a collection of almost three dozen sermons about the events of Holy Week (the Triumphal Entry, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion) and Easter (the Resurrection). It is the second volume in a series of sermons that began with O Come, Let God Adore Us! And Other Sermons for Advent and Christmas.
Not Exactly What They Expected: And Other Sermons for Holy Week and Easter focuses on the surprise and amazement of the followers and the foes of Jesus alike, as this unique Man went about confounding every expectation in the climactic last week of His earthly ministry. Both His fearless confrontation of His enemies and His peaceful submission to them baffled them. Both His sovereign ride into Jerusalem and His kneeling service in an upper room nearby stunned His diner companions. His death on the Cross was neither the defeat His detractors sought nor the disaster His disciples feared. And nobody understood, at first, what His Resurrection meant — for themselves and the world.
Only God’s expectations were perfectly realized in the events of that week. And Not Exactly What They Expected draws those expectations into sharper focus, connecting the Gospel narratives with Old Testament prophecies and New Testament proclamation. All of this may still be not exactly what you expected. But what you may expect in these pages is a closer look, a deeper appreciation, a richer celebration of what God has done for you in the world-changing and life-changing events of that one remarkable week.
